Walk 4 Water - Gold Award Project, Stephanie Ward

Oregon City, OREGON (September 19, 2023)—Stephanie Ward, a Girl Scout and recent graduate of Oregon City High School, is addressing the need for clean water for those in rural Zambia through World Vision with her Girl Scout Gold Award project.
Since Ward was in Kindergarten (and a Girl Scout Daisy), she has been participating in the annual event Walk4Water hosted by WaterAfrica in nearby Lake Oswego, Oregon. She has for the past several years gone above and beyond annual participation, and has additionally been collecting soda cans and bottles, and returning them to collect funds for WaterAfrica. She also has continued to walk in the annual Walk4Water event and has encouraged countless older and younger Girl Scouts in our community to do the same. Ward will leave a legacy in Oregon City for those who have seen her dedication to this project and has set up another bottle drop route and fundraiser that will continue on with others in charge now that she has graduated high school. Walk4Water will also be attended and supported by local Girl Scouts in Oregon City and beyond, due to Ward’s commitment, inspiration and encouragement.
“Not only are we helping those in need of clean water,” said Ward, speaking at a recent Girl Scout event, “we are helping keep the cans and bottles out of our landfills and other natural areas. This helps the fish and other creatures of our community as well as those who need water in Zambia. It’s all around great for the Earth.”
The Gold Award, earned by girls in grades 9-12, is the highest achievement in Girl Scouting. Gold Award Girl Scouts take the lead in designing and enacting a plan for change, providing innovative solutions to address issues in their community and beyond.
The next Lake Oswego, Oregon Walk4Water event will be held in late April, early May of 2024.
